Hon. Martha Koome
Lady Justice Karambu Koome is a Kenyan advocate and a Human Rights Defender, currently serving as the Chief Justice of Kenya since 21st May 2021. With an aggregate 33 years’ experience in the legal profession, she is the first woman to serve as Chief Justice in Kenya.
She holds an LL.B from the University of Nairobi received in 1986 and an LL.M in Public International Law from the University of London obtained in 2010.
She started off her legal career as a legal associate at Mathenge and Muchemi Advocates, following her admission to the bar as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1986. The Lady Justice went on to open her own law firm which she managed until 2003.
The Honourable Lady Justice was appointed Judge of the Court of Appeal in January 2012. Prior to her appointment to the Court of Appeal, she served as Puisne Judge for over eight years. In the same year, she was appointed to the post of Judge of the Court of Appeal, she was also elected Chairperson of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association.
